3.5 earthquake beneath the Kaiwi channel between Oʻahu and Molokaʻi
A magnitude-3.5 earthquake occurred beneath the Kaiwi channel, between Oʻahu and Molokaʻi at 1:53 p.m. HST on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024. The Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory issued an information statement saying the quake was centered 14 miles west-northwest of the village of Maunaloa on the Island of Molokaʻi at a depth of 5 miles below sea level. The earthquake had no apparent impact on either Maunaloa or Kīlauea volcanoes on the Island of Hawaiʻi.
Special Marine Warning with threat of thunderstorms and waterspouts
The National Weather Service has issued a Special Marine Warning for Big Island leeward, southeast and windward waters until 3:45 p.m. At 1:50 p.m., a line of showers capable of producing waterspouts and wind gusts over 34 knots was located over FAD Buoy A, or near Discovery Harbour, moving northeast at 30 knots. Waterspouts and wind gusts 34 knots or greater are in the forecast.

The Board of The Oʻahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association together with the organizing committee of Nā Wāhine O Ke Kai announced their decision today to cancel this year’s championship canoe races: the “Hawaiian Airlines Nā Wāhine O Ke Kai” scheduled for Sept. 27, 2020; and “Hawaiian Airlines Molokaʻi Hoe” scheduled on Oct. 11, 2020.

8 People Rescued After Vessel Sinks in Kaiwi Channel
A 21-foot recreational vessel had sunk and that those aboard were clinging to three kayaks that they tied together. The incident was reported on Sunday in the Kaiwi Channel, about 12 miles west of Molokaʻi.
