MFD to host Community Wildfire and Urban Interface Awareness Training

The public is invited to attend two events focused on Community Wildfire and Urban Interface Awareness. The events will be hosted by the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety, presented in collaboration with the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Wildfire Conservancy.

Fire prevention: Installation and regular testing of smoke alarms advised

As part of Fire Prevention Week, Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety is reminding residents to install and regularly test smoke alarms as a precaution as undetected fires.

Lahaina wildfire ruled ‘accidental,’ caused by downed power line that ignited dry vegetation

Sparks from a broken overhead power line ignited unmaintained vegetation off of Lahainaluna Road on the morning of Aug. 8, 2023, and that led to a chain of events that leveled Lahaina town and killed at least 102 people, according to an official origin-and-cause report released Wednesday. The fire’s cause was officially determined to be “accidental.”

Emergency training exercise at Kahului Airport on Friday

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies the public that a training exercise will be conducted at the Kahului Airport from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20. The Kahului Airport Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighters will conduct an emergency training exercise that tests the response to a simulated aircraft incident on a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The exercise is a requirement by the Federal Aviation Administration.
