‘Chinese in Agriculture’ exhibit celebrates legacy at Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair 2024
The Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair takes place today, Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at War Memorial Special Events Field. This year at AgFest, Maui County Farm Bureau (MCFB) honors the legacy of “Chinese in Agriculture on Maui.” The Wo Hing Society presents this free special exhibit from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., outlining the history and lasting impact of Chinese immigrants and settlers. The Wo Hing Society Hall stood in historic Lahaina Town as a symbol of Chinese culture for more than a century before it was destroyed in the fires.
MCFB’s Farm Product Purchase Program Extended
Now it its fourth month, the Farm Produce Purchase Program is a food purchase and distribution program available to Maui farms/farmers that sold an average of $2,500 per month produce prior to March 2020.
Mayor Victorino COVID-19 Update: Contributes $30K Per Week to Maui Food Distribution Effort
Maui Mayor Michael Victorino announced the launch the Farm Product Purchase Program which will allow for the distribution of produce to families in need on Maui. The County of Maui is contributing $30,000 a week for the next four to five weeks to farmers for the purchase of produce locally. That food will be offered at five distribution centers to be set up, initially on the island of Maui.
