Marine scientists are creating geometric reef modules that mimick the intricate designs coral and oyster reefs to maximize survival.

Black hole jets spanning 23 million light-years total length in outer space have been discovered by a Caltech-led team of astronomers using the W. M. Keck Observatory atop Maunakea on Hawaiʻi Island. The jets of hot plasma are the largest ever observed, according to the scientists.

A University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa assistant professor and an international team of researchers have revealed shifts in the tropical Pacific’s “Pacific Walker Circulation,” potentially leading to more prolonged El Niño and La Niña events, and intensifying climate-related impacts.

Using a suite of space- and ground-based telescopes, including two Maunakea Observatories in Hawaiʻi – W. M. Keck Observatory and Gemini North – the researchers found the pair of black holes embedded within two galaxies that merged when the universe was just 3 billion years young.

All 397 national parks across the country will offer free admission from January 14-16 for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, including Haleakala National Park.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority in partnership with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, is now accepting applications for the Kukulu Ola – Living Hawaiian Culture Program and Natural Resources Program.
