Governor Ige has informed the legislature of his intent to veto a list of eight bills. Noticeably absent from the list was the controversial marijuana dispensaries bill, which the governor continues to review. “There are concerns in terms of the implementation. The implementation schedule is very aggressive. We’ll be working very hard to meet those deadlines, but resources made available to the department as well as the aggressive schedule will be a challenge. So, I’m committed to implementing the law in the best way that we can,” said Gov. Ige.
Governor Vetoes 3 Bills on Nursing, Wildlife, and Building Code
The governor vetoed HB763, relating to the state building code, because he said it would have set a “negative precedent” by using funds from the Hurricane Relief Fund.
Governor Identifies 9 Bills for Possible Veto
Items on the list for potential veto include bills relating to: feral birds (HB619) and native wildlife (HB988), the state building code (HB763), timeshare conveyances (HB424), nursing (HB654), sentencing (SB68), contracts (SB1265), the Hawaii Health Systems Corp. (HB1130), and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (SB3).
Maui Senator Saddened by Veto of Hawaiian Language Bill
Senator J. Kalani English of Maui, who is a member of the Senate Committee on Hawaiian Affairs said he was saddened by the governor’s decision to veto the measure; but vowed to continue work in further evaluating how the Hawaiian language can be appropriately incorporated into state government.

Today is the deadline for Governor Neil Abercrombie to sign measures into law, veto them, or allow the bills to become law without his signature.
Governor Sends Notice of Intent to Veto 19 Bills
Governor Abercrombie notified the State Legislature this week of his intent to veto 19 bills. To date, the governor has signed more than 150 measures into law. The deadline to veto bills, sign them into law, or let them become law without his signature, is July 10.
