Crews begin preparations this week for a project that is designed to improve traction on the road to the summit at Haleakala during wet and icy conditions.   At the close of business tomorrow, the National Park Service will close the road from Kalahaku up to the summit so that equipment can be brought in and staged.  The upper portion of the park road will be closed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the construction period which is slated to begin on Monday.  The work will not affect traffic on the lower portion of Crater Road, where the public will still be able to access Halemau’u Trail, Hosmer’s Grove and the lower visitor center.
