SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT #01 – DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE
The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for Maui County saying damaging southwest winds are possible on Thursday and Friday. The conditions are the result of a strong low pressure system northwest of Kauai, along with a cold front moving through the islands. The strongest gusts are expected to occur on the windward sides of the smaller islands and over higher terrain where damaging gusts of up to 60 mph are possible. Rains will also accompany the front, but winds are the main concern with this particular storm system.
High wind events in the past have led to spotty power outages, ttrees and branches being blown down, and roof damage. As a precaution, winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Visitors to the summit need to drive with extra caution. Object which could be overturned or carried by the wind should also be secured.
