The state Department of Transportation (DOT) will be awarding the contract for the Honoapiilani Widening Project, Lahainaluna Road to Aholo Road. A bid protest had been filed but a subsequent hearing was not requested, allowing the DOT to move forward with the contract award process. Bids from prospective contractors, ranging from $18,495,401, to $24,767,977, are now being reviewed and the contract award is pending.

The project takes aim at relieving traffic congestion through the Lahaina area between Lahainaluna Road and Aholo Road by widening Honoapiilani Highway from a two lane to a four lane divided highway with curbed median, sidewalks and paved shoulders.

“We are now one step closer to making these improvements on Honoapiilani Highway a reality” said DOT Director, Brennon Morioka. “This project is the latest in our statewide goal of improving the capacity of Hawaii roadways while at the same time making them safer and more efficient,” Morioka said. Other improvements to this section of Honoapiilani Highway will include construction of retaining and noise barrier walls, guardrails, drainage and intersection improvements, traffic signal upgrades, landscaping and more.

Once construction begins, the project is scheduled to take 14 months to complete.
