DOT MAUI UPDATES: KAHULUI RUNWAY, PUUNENE AVENUE, HALEAKALA HWY, PIILANI HWY, MOLOKAI ROADWORK
KAHULUI RUNWAY WORK TO RESULT IN INCREASED NIGHTTIME NOISE
Kahului and Wailuku residents can expect an increase in nighttime air traffic on select nights through the end of June.Officials with the state Department of Transportation say this is the result of runway maintenance work scheduled at Kahului Airport.Commercial flights will be diverted from the longer 2/20 runway to the shorter 5/23 runway on Sunday nights through Friday mornings, from 12:01 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., nightly.The nighttime schedule will continue through June 30, 2009, for the construction of improved runway drainage culverts.
NIGHTTIME PUUNENE AVENUE LANE CLOSURES NEXT WEEK
The state Department of Transportation advises Maui motorists of alternating single lane closures on Puunene Avenue between Kaahumanu Highway and Kuihelani Highway in both directions on the following dates and times:
Daytime:
- Monday, March 23, through Wednesday, March 25, Friday, March 27, from 8:30 a.m., to 3:00 p.m.
Nighttime:
- Monday night, March 23, through Wednesday morning, March 25, from 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., nightly.
Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the work area and to allow for extra travel time. Roadwork is weather-permitting.
24-HOUR HALEAKALA HIGHWAY LANE CLOSURES FROM KAHULUI TO PUKALANI
The state Department of Transportation advises Maui motorists of various lane closures on Haleakala Highway on the following dates and locations:
- Monday, March 23, through Wednesday, March 25, and on Friday, March 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., daily, single lane closures in the Pukalani-bound direction between North Firebreak Road and Haliimaile Road for median shoulder paving and truck crossing work.
- 24-hour single lane closures in the Pukalani-bound direction from Keahua Road to Haliimaile Road for concrete overlay operations. In this area, one Kahului-bound lane will be contraflowed to provide an additional Pukalani-bound lane on the following dates and times:
- Monday afternoon, March 23, through Wednesday, March 25, and on
- Friday morning, March 27, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., nightly.
- Friday afternoon, March 20, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
During contraflow hours, Pukalani-bound motorists wishing to turn left onto Haliimaile Road may do so only from the contraflow lane.The four-inch concrete overlay will cover a five-mile uphill portion of Haleakala Highway and is expected to extend the life of the roadway by more than 30 years.Phase I of the project focused on the area between North Firebreak Road and Keahua Junction. Phase II now focuses on the section of roadway between Keahua Junction and Haliimaile Road. The final phase will focus on the half-mile section below the Old Haleakala Road off-ramp. Completion of the entire project is anticipated in March of 2009.

PIILANI HIGHWAY DAYTIME ROADWORK
The state Department of Transportation advises Maui motorists of alternating single lane closures on Piilani Highway in both directions between Uwapo Road and Lipoa Parkway on Monday, March 23, through Wednesday, March 25, and on Friday, March 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., daily, for pavement resurfacing.With the exception of emergency situations, work will not be scheduled at this location on Thursday, March 26, in observance of the Prince Kuhio Day holiday.
Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the work area and to allow for extra travel time. Roadwork is weather-permitting.
KAMEHAMEHA V HIGHWAY LANE CLOSURES ON MOLOKAI
The state Department of Transportation advises Molokai motorists of alternating single lane closures in both directions on Kamehameha V Highway between Mile Post 2 and Mile Post 4, on Monday, March 23, through Wednesday, March 25, and on Friday, March 27, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., daily, for pavement resurfacing.With the exception of emergency situations, work will not be scheduled in this location on Thursday, March 26, in observance of the Prince Kuhio Day holiday.Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the work area and to allow for extra travel time. Roadwork is weather-permitting.
