Former MPD Sgt. Identified In Murder Suicide Investigation

A former Sergeant with the Maui Police Department was identified as one of two people killed in an apparent murder suicide on Maui, Monday night in Makawao.  An autopsy today revealed that 59-year-old Barry W. Alford died as a result of a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head.  His death is classified as a suicide.

Authorities also identified the woman killed in the incident as 58-year-old Karolyn Alford.  According to police reports, the woman was killed as a result of two gunshot wounds-one to her head, the other to her chest.  Her death has been classified as a homicide.  Both were identified through latent fingerprint comparison.

Officers responded to the Alford home located at 310 Iini Way following a 9-1-1 call at around 10:15 p.m. concerning domestic abuse with possible shots fired.

Barry Alford first joined the Maui Police Department on April 16, 1985.  He served for a little over two years before resigning as a Police Officer II on July 14, 1987.

Alford was rehired on June 16, 1990 and resigned for a second time as a Lieutenant on November 2, 2000.

After a two year break from the department, Alford was hired back at a lesser rank of Sergeant on February 18, 2003 and resigned for a third time on April 30, 2008.
