50% Reduction in Water Use for Hawaiian Homes on Moloka’i

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) announced today that Moloka’i water users in the Ho’olehua area need to reduce their water usage by 50% while DHHL works to recharge their water reservoir and completes repairs at the Kala’e well site.

There are two wells at the Kala’e site and both pumps are under repair.  Repair work is expected to commence within a week on the main pump, and installation and operation of that pump is expected in two weeks.

While the repairs are being done, a temporary emergency water line is being installed from the Moloka’i Ranch water system to recharge the water reservoir servicing the Ho’olehua area. The temporary line is being installed with help from Moloka’i Ranch, Monsanto Moloka’i, the County of  Maui Department of Water Supply, and DHHL employees.

DHHL wishes to acknowledge the support from all of the entities on Moloka’i to meet the challenge of providing water into the DHHL water system while repairs are being done.

Earlier this year, the DHHL wells supplied water to the County of Maui system when county repairs were being done. Two weeks ago, DHHL’s second pump at Kala’e broke down and the county system began supplying water to DHHL’s system.

In the meantime, users are asked to reduce consumption by 50% to give the reservoir a chance to refill. Restricting lawn watering, car washing, and taking shorter showers all help to reduce water usage.
