Glover leads by one at SBS

The name has changed, but the format and venue remain the same. The SBS Championship begins a four-day run on Thursday at Kapalua’s demanding Plantation Course, marking the start of the PGA Tour campaign.

Speaking of starts, reigning US Open champion Lucas Glover got off to a slow one. But Glover recovered from a double bogey on the opening hole by going 9-under par over a nine-hole stretch in the middle of his round – including a pair of eagles — and closed with a birdie for a 7-under 66

Nathan Green of Australia and Martin Laird of Scotland, among seven players making their debuts at the all-winner’s event, joined Dustin Johnson and Nick Watson at 67. British Open champion Stewart Cink and Masters champion Angel Cabrera were among those at 68.

Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy had a 69. Ogilvy, the only former winner at Kapalua in the 28-player field, won last year’s title by strokes at 24-under.

The tournament continues through Sunday.

UH WINS OPENER: It was a triumphant homecoming for Charlie Wade last night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The longtime assistant with the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, who spent the past several seasons as the women’s coach at the University of the Pacific, celebrated his return to Manoa as the head coach of the men’s team with a victory. No. 12 Hawaii opened the campaign with an impressive 30-20, 30-20, 30-26 sweep of No. 10 Ohio State on the first night of the Outriggers Hotel Invitational. UH meets No. 5 Penn State tonight and closes out the round-robin tournament by facing top-ranked USC on Saturday.
