4-Month $1.36 Million Kamehameha Road Improvement Project begins Sunday
A four-month, $1.36 million road improvement project gets underway this weekend on Kamehameha Avenue in Kahului. The project involves reconstruction of Kamehameha Avenue between Puunene Avenue and Hana Highway.
The project will be conducted in multiple phases. While work is planned during the night time hours, most phases require detours and daytime closures. County officials say the daytime closures are necessary for safety reasons, and to allow concrete topping time to cure.
Work begins at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2010 and will continue through mid-August 2010 under a contract with David P. Ting and Sons, Inc.
Phase 1 & 2: The first phase affects the east-bound lanes of Kamehameha Avenue between Alamaha and Hoohana. Both lanes will be completely closed for 1-2 weeks; work will then move to the west-bound lanes (Phase two) in the same area requiring those lanes to be closed for 1-2 weeks.
Phase 3 & 4: The third and fourth phases will affect the west-bound lanes of Kamehameha Avenue from Hoohana to Puunene (including the west-bound lanes of the Hoohana and Kamehameha Avenue intersection); both lanes will be closed for 1-2 weeks.
Phase 5 & 6: The fifth and sixth phases will affect the east-bound lanes of Kamehameha Avenue from Alamaha to Hana Highway(including the east-bound lanes of the Alamaha and Kamehameha Avenue intersection); both lanes will be closed for 1-2 weeks.
Phase 7 & 8: Phases seven and eight will affect the east-bound lanes of Kamehameha Avenue from Puunene to Hoohana (including the east-bound lanes of the Hoohana and Kamehameha Avenue intersection); both lanes will be closed for 1-2 weeks.
Phase 9 & 10: Phases nine and ten will affect the west-bound lanes of Kamehameha Avenue between Hana Highway and Alamaha (including the west-bound lanes of the Alamaha and Kamehameha Avenue intersection).
Lane closures will be set up to allow motorists to utilize the affected areas of Kamehameha Ave. County officials say this will allow access to businesses in the area at all times during the project. Motorists are asked to exercise caution when traveling through the project area. For more information, call the County of Maui Department of Public Works at 270-7745.
