Draft EA submitted for Maui Lani Shopping Center
By Wendy Osher
A Draft Environmental Assessment has been filed for the development of a neighborhood shopping center on nearly 13 acres of land in Kahului. The Maui Lani Shopping Center currently has Safeway named as the proposed major tenant.
Proposed access points for the site are from Maui Lani Parkway and Kaahumanu Avenue. A key issue related to the proposed project involves potential traffic impacts on Kainani Street that serves the Historic Sandhills neighborhood.
In an effort to mitigate concerns posed by residents, the applicant reduced the project size from approximately 130,000 square feet to the 105,098 square feet. The proposed Safeway would occupy more than half of that area with other tenants to include retail and service shops, office space and restaurants.
HRT, LTD., a subsidiary corporation of the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation, filed the document, proposing the development of the site. A 30 day period for public comment on the document begins today.
