UHMC Pumpkin Patch to benefit Agricultural programs

In the spirit of the upcoming Halloween holiday, the University of Hawaii Maui College is host a Pumpkin Patch event on Saturday, October 23^rd at the Agricultural Department complex next to the Maui County recycling facility off Wahinepio Drive.  There will be seven pumpkin varieties to choose from with options ranging in size from ornamentals to 24-pound globes plumped up by a crew of students over the summer.  Sales of the pumpkins will support programs of the UHMC Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources.

The bigger varieties include Aladdins, Gladiators and Magic Lanterns, weighing in at 15 to 25 pounds, Mid-range varieties include Magician and Field Trip, while the Bumpkin is a small hybrid and Baby Bear tops out at 2.5 pounds.

“This is a great opportunity for Maui families to get into the spirit of the harvest season, find the ideal pumpkin for their home decorations and have a fun time,” said Project Director Ann Emmsley, associate professor of agriculture.

The Pumpkin Patch will be open for visitors from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 23, 2010. The harvest event will include crafts sales, face painting for keiki, dental hygiene demonstrations, a pumpkin soup prepared by Maui Culinary Academy students and displays and information on programs of UH Maui College and the University of Hawai`i System.
