Reiki is a popular technique for stress reduction and healing in Hawaii. This technique originated in Japan, but was brought to the islands at the early part of the last century, by Reiki master, Hawayo Takata. Today, Reiki clinics are located all around the Hawaiian Islands, using healing hands to provide life force energy to those who seek it.

History of Reiki

Reiki was created by the first Grand Master of Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui developed the techniques while studying at a Buddhist training course on Mount Kurama, through a spiritual revelation. He brought his techniques to Tokyo, where he founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, which means Usui’s Spiritual Energy Therapy Method Society. Here, he taught Reiki to more than 2,000 people and 16 of those students continued their training all the way up to a “master” level.

The Five Precepts of Reiki

While studying and practicing this healing technique, Dr. Usui developed the five precepts of Reiki that were to emanate naturally from a person through his natural flow. These five precepts include:

  • Just for today, do not worry
  • Just for today, do not anger
  • Honor your parents, teachers and elders
  • Earn your living honestly
  • Show gratitude to every living thing

By incorporating all five of these precepts into your life, you can achieve your natural life flow for optimal health and wellness.

Reiki: Religion or Art?

While Reiki has a definite spiritual nature, it is not considered a religion. Those who practice and partake in Reiki healings to not have to subscribe to a particular dogma in order for the healings to be effective. Instead, a higher power is in control of the life force and the healing process that takes place during the Reiki session. Many people do find that be participating in Reiki, they are more in touch with their spiritual life and the higher power that they believe in.

Reiki is a technique that is often passed down through the generations. Those who practice this healing art find that Reiki is a way of life and a means of bonding to others who follow the guidance of the Reiki energy. Masters get together regularly to experience community and receive support in a teaching environment. This art is one that requires commitment and mutual respect throughout life.
