To watch a dancer be swallowed by rhythm is to witness the promise of freedom from these cumbersome bodies.

Dancers seem to defy laws of gravity and motion. Graceful and lithe, exuberant and meticulous.

These adjectives describe the full body whirlwind of movement that is Philadanco, (Philadelphia Dance Company).

With spellbinding, breathtaking performances that meld elegance, funk, grace and masterful acrobatic choreography, Philadanco will bring its unique meld of dance to the Castle Theater on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 pm.

Performing 40 weeks out of the year, the 17 piece ensemble of dancers offers a visual smattering of styles set to a wide array of music. The group blends spicy modern dance with technical elements of classical ballet, jazz and funk.

These influences are melded around the central thematic hub of the organization: African Dance.

The group has been widely honored for their creativity in preserving the heritage of African American traditions in movement.
