Tsunami Watch in effect for Hawaii following 8.9 Japan Quake

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami WATCH for Hawaii following a 8.9 earthquake off the North East coast of Honshu, Japan. The quake occurred at 7:46 p.m. Hawaii Standard time (Thursday, March 10, 2011).

Based on all available data, a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far form the epicenter. An investigation is underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

If tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave is 2:59 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time on Friday March 11, 2011. Messages will be issued hourly or sooner as conditions warrant.
