60 Youth Musicians Showcased in Annual Spring Concert

Sixty student musicians from 15 elementary, intermediate, and high schools on Maui will showcase their talents in an upcoming concert for youth.

The Maui Youth Philharmonic, Sinfonietta and Beginning Strings Orchestras present their annual Spring Concert on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the Baldwin High School auditorium.

The free concert features students ranging in age from 9-17 on strings, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.  Guest artists Sue Nakama will provide accompaniment on French horn, Richard Tadaki on trombone and Stephen Rodrigues on baritone.

The Philharmonic Orchestra, comprised of advanced student musicians, will perform the Brandenburg Sinfonia, The Barber of Seville Overture, Song Without Words, Valdres March, The Pink Panther and The Sound of Music.

The intermediate-level Sinfonietta Orchestra, will perform Best of Bach, O Mio Babbino Caro and Meet The Flintstones.  Both orchestras will perform their selections under the direction of conductor Lance Jo.

Selections will also be performed by students in the Beginnings Strings and String Ensemble classes, under the direction of Roger Yarborough.

Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra aims to expand and enhance music education on Maui.   The Orchestra currently offers beginning and advanced music theory classes.

The MYPO will also be sponsoring the 2011 Maui Summer Music Festival with individual instruction and group classes in violin, viola and cello for beginning strings, performance strings and chamber music ensembles.  The festival will feature professional instructors from Japan and Hawaii, and will be held June 13-18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pomaika’i Elementary School in Kahului.  For more information, visit www.mauiyouthphilharmonic.org.
