They’re warm, furry, cute, kind of ugly-looking, and of mixed heritage. They’re best friends, hard workers, and caring to the sick and elderly. They don’t have to be a purebred to be number one in your book, so why not show off your four-legged friend at the Poi Doggie Contest on Sunday August 7. Purebreeds need not enter.

From 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., ShaeferLawn at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center will become a playground for the furry ones. Enter your family member in a contest for: best dressed, best dog-owner look-alike, best trick, best howl, most mixed up, stellar senior and ugly mug.

Pets must be at least one year of age to enter and leashed. Each entry costs $10 and registration begins at 2:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. The contests will begin at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free. This event is held in conjunction with the Schafer International Gallery’s Poi Dog Exhibit going on now. The Maui Humane Society, The Pet Shop, Ohana Pet, and Petco, have collaborated for this fun day for the dogs. For more information visit www.mauiarts.org.
