The Maui Planning Commission voted this week to approve a Special Management Area Use Permit for Costco in Kahului.

The expansion plans call for the construction of a ten-lane self service gasoline fueling facility, and the addition of more than 29,000 square feet to the existing warehouse store.

The wholesale retailer also has plans for a 3,200 square-foot car wash and the addition of 128 parking stalls.

Officials from the Maui Planning Department say the application was approved unanimously during Tuesday’s commission meeting, and a petition to intervene was denied.

The improvements at 540 Haleakala Highway, just south of the Kahului Airport have drawn the interest of motorists who pay some of the highest prices for gas in the state.

The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report listed gas in Wailuku today at $4.39 for a gallon of regular gasoline.  That’s 30 cents higher than Honolulu, 10 cents more than Hilo, and 77 cents higher than the national average.
