Maui High School Kahului Campus Celebrates 40 Years

Maui High School celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Kahului campus this year.

The event comes as a precursor to the grand centennial celebration for the old (Hamakuapoko) and new (Kahului) Maui High School in 2013.

To commemorate the milestone this year, a variety of festivities are planned over a four-day period from October 20-23, 2011.

The festivities include a Hall of Honor Banquet, a Saber Family Fun Night, an Open House at the Old Maui High School campus, Saber Homecoming Festivities, and an MHS Golf Tournament. Details of the planned events are as follows:

Hall of Honor Banquet: Thursday, October 20, 2011

The inaugural Hall of Honor Banquet recognizes MHS alumni and faculty from the new and old campuses.  The gala dinner and awards will run from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at the Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului.

Nominations are being sought for for the following categories:

Inspiration Award: A faculty member past or present who went above-and-beyond and made a difference to the students of the school.

Spirit of Maui Award:  An alumni who gave back to the community, who made a difference within the community.

Silversword Heritage Award: An alumni who is distinguished in life & work

Award of Excellence: An alumni who has excelled in their field or profession.

Saber Spirit:  An individual who is an unsung hero to the school, possibly volunteered at the school.

Deadline to submit nomination forms is September 30. Nomination forms and instructions are available at the MHS website at www.mauihigh.org.

Tickets are $50 per person or $500 for a table of 10.  Proceeds of the Hall of Honor Banquet will benefit the MHS Foundation.  To reserve tickets for the banquet, those interested can call Glenda Joyo at 873-3000 extension 2241.

Saber Family Fun Night: 5-9 p.m. Friday, October 21

A second annual Saber Family Fun Night will be held on Friday, October 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Kahului campus.

Activities associated with the event include a Career Technical Education (CTE) Showcase in the gym.

Displays and interactive booths feature art, communication, business, public and human services, health services, robotics, and natural resources.

UH Maui College will also showcasing 15 of their programs including allied health, automotive technology, culinary arts, fashion technology, hospitality & tourism, business technology and more.

As part of the Saber Family Fun Night, there will also be a variety of food and entertainment staged outside of the gym, hosted by emcee Pito Javier from NATIVE, 92.5 FM.  In addition to bouncy castles and miniature pony rides for the kids, those in attendance can expect the following:

  • Food booths: dry mein, teriyaki plate, steak & chicken, chili cheese nachos, hot dog & chips, pork & peas, apple turnover, chicken adobo, kim chee, Portuguese sausage, cotton candy, chicken hekka, Hawaiian plate, teri burger, shave ice, chow fun, and ice cream.
  • Featured entertainment: Nuff Sed, Unified Soul, Moku, MHS cheerleaders, band and color guard, plus more.

To close out the evening, a spirited Saber Rally will take place in the gym at 9 p.m.  The MHS football team will be introduced, along with a presentation of the homecoming court and the crowning of a king and queen.  The evening ends with a lip-synching competition showcasing both students and faculty members.

Old Maui High School Open House: Saturday, October 22

Guided and self-tours will be offered of the old Maui High School Campus at Hamakuapoko on Saturday, October 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saber Homecoming Games: Saturday, October 22

MHS fans and supporters are invited to the October 22 football games, featuring the Junior Varsity at 4:30 and the Varsity at 7 p.m.  Both teams face opponent Baldwin High School.  The halftime show will feature the award-winning MHS band, color guard & homecoming court.

MHS Golf Tournament: Sunday, October 23 – 7 a.m. Shotgun start

The 40th anniversary celebration wraps up with a golf tournament, fundraiser for the MHS Athletic Department. The two-man scramble format begins with a 7 a.m. shotgun start at the Waiehu Golf Course.

Cost for entry is $100 per player, with proceeds to benefit MHS Athletics. Information can be found at www.mauihigh.org or by contacting Michael Ban at 873-3000 extension 2243 for entry forms.
