VIDEO/PHOTOS: Some Structures at Maui Cannery Dismantled

[flashvideo file=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqY7R-IlKH0 /] The old Maui Land & Pineapple Company (ML&P) Cannery building in Kahului is in the process of being gutted, with some buildings on the property being dismantled.  By noon today, just the bare bones of the structure were still left standing, at a place where pineapple on Maui once thrived as a leading industry.

During the second quarter of 2011, the ML&P sold a portion of its former pineapple cannery site in Kahului for approximately $9.8 million.

Company officials said part of the proceeds from that sale was used for working capital and to pay down debt; while about $4.1 million in proceeds were set aside to settle obligations related to former operations.

The parcel where actual canning operations took place was sold to Michael J. Fergus.

Officials with CB Richard Ellis, the company that listed the property said the new owner had plans to tear down some of the buildings on the property to make the remaining structures more functional.  Plans call for the lease of space on land that is currently classified as M-2 or heavy industrial.

There is still one parcel remaining, out of four original parcels listed at the former HC&S Kahului site.  The seven-acre lot is currently listed at around $6 million.  It is located adjacent to the Queen Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center with access off of Kane Street.
