BRIEF: Honoapiilani OPEN Following Accident Near Launiupoko

Maui police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a vehicle and driver that fled the scene of a fatal collision early this morning with pedestrian near Launiupoko.  Maui police say 19-year-old Failagi Vite Laloulu of Kahului died at the scene as a result of the crash.  *** An update with details of the accident are posted at a new LINK.

The Honoapiilani Highway (Hwy 30) is now open following a motor vehicle accident fronting Launiupoko Park in West Maui.

Maui police began rerouting traffic around the scene at 4:41 a.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2011.

Northbound traffic was diverted up Kai Hele Ku onto Haniu, then to Punakea, and down to the cane haul road.  South bound traffic was rerouted onto a secondary cane haul road.

Police had cleared the accident and completed their investigation by 8:31 a.m.
