Countdown to XTERRA: Best Viewing and Live Updates

Off-road triathlon’s event of the year is just hours away, as the 16th XTERRA World Championship gets underway at 9 a.m. HST on Maui’s D.T. Fleming Beach.

Spectators can view the race along Fleming Beach and at the Transition Area/Finish Line, located on the poolside lawn at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.  Event organizers say the first place athlete is expected to finish at approximately 11:30 a.m.  Event parking is at the ball field behind the preschool at Kapalua.

Those who can’t make it to the West side today, can get live updates on the internet at www.xterramaui.com, via facebook.com/XTERRAplanet and at twitter.com/xterraoffroad starting at 9 a.m. Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3 p.m. EST, 9 p.m. in Europe, 5 a.m. in Sydney, Australia, 8 a.m. in New Zealand, 4 p.m. in Brazil).

Leading up to the Championship event, was a series of amateur events yesterday, benefiting the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui County.  Click HERE for results.

Event organizers say water at Fleming Beach at 6:30 a.m., was calm with perfect conditions awaiting competitors.

More than 650 athletes from 28 countries and 42 US States will compete in the challenge, that includes a 1.5km (1-mile) rough water swim, 30km (18.3-miles) mountain bike race, and 10km (6.1-miles) trail run.

Among the popular contenders are world renown cyclist Lance Armstrong (view pre-race VIDEO of Armstrong), and defending champion, Conrad Stoltz of South Africa.

The first place finisher will take home the XTERRA world title and a large share of the $100,000 pro prize purse.
