OHA Settlement Community Meeting on Maui, Dec. 2

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs will host a community meeting on Maui this Friday, December 2, to discuss the recently announced Ceded Lands Settlement Proposal with the state.

Residents are invited to share their concerns, and learn about the proposed settlement relating to past due ceded land revenue.

The proposal calls for the land conveyance of property in Kaka‘ako to OHA as payment to cover past due amounts owed to the organization from ceded land payments.

If approved, the agreement would finally and completely resolve any and all claims relating to OHA’s share of ceded land receipts from November 7, 1978 to July 1, 2012.

The proposed settlement is subject to legislative approval and OHA has the ability to walk away from the proposal prior to a decision by the legislature.

If approved by the Hawai’i Legislature the agreement would give OHA 25 acres of property in Kaka’ako valued at an estimated $200 million.

The Maui meeting runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.
