Organizers of the TEDxMaui 2012 conference will host a free documentary screening and talk story session, in anticipation of the upcoming event.

TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, is a non-profit organization, devoted to ideas worth spreading.

Each year the group brings together people from the these unique realms to share inspirational and revolutionary ideas with the public.

The list of speakers at this year’s Maui event include: 2010 Poet Laureate W.S. Merwin; Susan Casey, the Editor-In-Chief of O, the Oprah Magazine; Dr. Gary Greenberg, whose 3D microscope imagery has created visual landscapes beyond everyday perception; and professor of Hawaiian Studies, Dr. Pualani Kanaka’ole Kanahele, among others.

This year’s Maui conference takes place on Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center; but the pre-conference talk story session and film screening will be held from 6 to 9 p.m.  on Thursday, January 5th at the Akaku: Maui Community Television, media lab on Dairy Road.

TEDxMaui co-producers Katie McMillan and Sara Tekula will host the Thursday preview session which includes a screening of “The Future We Will Create: Inside the World of TED”, an 83-minute documentary filmed on-location at the annual TED conference, a larger-scale event held on the mainland, from which the Maui event was born.

The film, which was directed by actress Daphne Zuniga and released in 2007, features appearances by Al Gore, Peter Gabriel, Anthony Robbins, Julia Sweeney, and the founders and innovators of many important technologies and new ideas. The film provides an all-access pass inside the world of TED, to what Wired Magazine refers to as “arguably the hottest gathering around”.

After the film, attendees are invited to ask questions and “talk story” with McMillan and Tekula about the upcoming Maui event.

Individuals interested in attending the screening and talk story should confirm their interest, by emailing [email protected] or by signing up via the Facebook invite at: http://on.fb.me/TEDxMauiScreening.  More information about the Maui event is available at the following website: http://www.tedxmaui.com.
