The governor confirmed the appointment today of Carmen Kahulumealani “Hulu” Lindsey to the Maui trustee seat at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

We first reported the story on Monday in a phone interview with Lindsey who shared her thoughts on the 11 months ahead.

Today, Governor Neil Abercrombie described Lindsey as a well-respected individual who is committed to the task at hand.

“I am very grateful to have found someone who is knowledgeable about the legislative process and the issues that OHA will be addressing in the upcoming session. Ms. Lindsey is focused and ready,” said Gov. Abercrombie.

OHA Chair of the Board of Trustees, Colette Machado welcomed Lindsey to the board saying, “I look forward to working closely with her on the important issues affecting our beneficiaries on the island of Maui.”

Lindsey fills the vacancy left by the resignation of Trustee Boyd Mossman who resigned in November to fulfill a church calling in Kona.  Lindsey will serve on an interim basis until November, when a special election will be held to fill the remaining two years of Mossman’s term.

Governor Abercrombie was tasked with selecting a successor when OHA declared an impasse during a meeting in December.

Lindsey is the owner of businesses Lindsey Realty and Kahulu Productions, and is a long-time local entertainer.  She previously worked for Maui Land and Pineapple Company, Inc., the County of Maui, and for former governor John A. Burns.

“I am honored by the governor’s appointment and will work tirelessly to serve our native Hawaiian beneficiaries on the island of Maui,” said Lindsey.

Lindsey will be sworn in as an OHA Trustee today.
