Honolulu Inter-Island Parking Structure 3 Week Closure
By Wendy Osher
The Inter-Island Terminal (IIT) Parking Structure at Honolulu International Airport will undergo an intermittent closure for about three weeks for steam cleaning maintenance.
The cleaning project begins on Sunday, January 22, and continues through Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
During this period, two floors will be closed at a time, beginning with 6th and 7th floors. Crews will work downward, removing oil, coolant, tire marks, spills, gum and other material stains.
For additional parking, inter-island travelers will be able to use the International Arrivals Terminal Parking Structure. Signs have been posted around the IIT Parking Structure to notify travelers of the affected floors.
Officials with the state Department of Transportation say crews will work two shifts overnight, from 2 p.m. through 6 a.m. daily, to expedite the cleaning process. Authorities also say cleaning work is scheduled during a historically slow period in the travel season.
To create additional public parking, monthly parking permit holders at the International Parking Structure will be allowed to park at the Overseas Terminal Parking Structure for the duration of the cleaning.
Over the same period in 2011, DOT officials say an average of 464 spaces remained available each day at the IIT, with an additional 1,300 stalls open in the International Arrivals Parking Structure.
