2012_basketball.logoSeabury Hall’s Shane Jacob carried the Spartans on his back for the final eight minutes, scoring all of his game-high 17 points, but it was too little too late as Kalaheo escaped with a 38-36 victory in Friday’s Division II semifinals of the HHSAA state basketball tournament at Farrington Gym.

Plagued by dismal shooting and poor ball-handling for the better part of three quarters, Seabury Hall trailed by 10 points with 1 minute, 15 seconds to play in the third quarter. That’s when Jacob, the team’s leading scorer throughout the Maui Interscholastic League regular season, scored his first field goal of the game. Jacob added a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third period down 26-16.

Jacob’s steal and follow layup gave Seabury a 36-35 lead with 1:05 left in the game.

But Kalaheo got a 3-point play from Josh Ko 30 seconds later to secure the victory.

Seabury’s Rocky DeLyon rebounded a missed free throw by Ko with 10 seconds to play, but the Spartans final shot attempt — by Michael Clarion at the buzzer — bounced off the glass and just missed. It would have won the game for the Spartans, who fell behind by as many as 13 points in the first half, had it gone in.

Ko and Nainoa Frank each had 13 points for the Mustangs.

Seabury Hall will face Hawaii Prep for third place today at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 550-AM radio.
