In a broken voice, the one she recognizes as “Dad,” Bobby Grossman fought back tears just long enough to tell his daughter, Dakota, “You did it. You did it on your own, with heart.”

The Seabury Hall track coach just witness the apple of his eye earn the unofficial title of best prep distance runner in the 50th state, now that she officially claimed the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs at the Island Movers State Track and Field Championships.

The two-day meet concluded Saturday at Kea’au High School on the Big Island, where Grossman removed any doubt about who is No. 1.

“It was a happy, sort of crying moment,” responded Bobby, when asked to reflect on the sequence of events following her dramatic push to the finish line. It was that reconnection with his daughter as he was congratulating her that drew tears of joy, washing away the bitter defeat from a year ago.

The 1,500-meter victory was arguably the best race of the night as the field surged in 200-meter intervals and drew cheers from the standing-room-only crowd. Fans watched Grossman and nemesis Zoe Sims of Hawaii Preparatory Academy battle wit and stamina.

Grossman, the two-time state champion cross-county runner, put her signature on the girls 1,500 by overcoming the trappings of three Punahou girls and five Big Island Interscholastic Federation runners — including two of Sims teammates.

The competition had no idea that Grossman had been preparing for this race since Sims beat the Valley Isle runner on her home soil in 2011.

“I thought it was the race of the night the way it played out going back and froth like that,” the coach said.

It was Dakota’s epic jaunt down the final stretch that proved to swift for Sims, who suffered the same fate three weeks earlier when Seabury and Grossman were preparing their pre-race plan. The all-comers meet should have served notice to the competition.

Grossman’s winning time of 4 minutes, 43.53 seconds was 30 seconds faster than her previous best, and just five ticks shy of breaking the state record. Not surprising when you consider the stellar field of 12 hungry underclassmen.

“They tried to box her in a couple of times and Dakota would have to surge to get out of it. But she was ready. We’ve been preparing for that race for a year.

“We did a lot of speed work to get her ready, a lot of 50s.”

Grossman’s ability to burst trough traffic at a moments notice proved the superior skill set the sophomore from Upcountry Maui needed — over and over during the course of the four laps.

“She did it herself,” Coach Grossman said. “She was where she needed to be and had the ability to make a move. I told her before the race, if the weather is right, ‘Put the hammer down.’ ”

Sims was timed in 4:43.78, followed by Hilo’s Carmen Garson-Shumway in 4:46.41. The fast pace, eventually wore down the rest of he field, but all six medal winners finished under 5 minutes.

Grossman later won the 3,000 by 10 seconds, crossing the finish line in 10:45.64. She scored a league high 20 points.

Baldwin pole vaulter Kristine Felix capped her prep career with her third consecutive pole vault title, clearing the bar at 12 feet.  Teammate Amber Kozaki scored 13.5 points for a pair of third-place finishes in the pole vault (11-0) and long jump (16-10).

King Kekaulike junior Teianna Collins-Shirota was third in the discus (121-1) and Baldwin’s Alesha Martin  was third in the shot put (38-11).

Fourth-place medals went to Seabury’s Dylan Ross in the 800 (2:02.02) and Kamehameha Maui’s Ashley Wendt in the long jump (16-7.25).
