Two public high schools on Maui were recognized for making the grade in a list published by the Washington Post.

The high school challenge index highlights the nation’s top 9% of schools for effectively preparing students for college success.

Maui County schools making the list were Maui High and King Kekaulike High School, both on the Valley Isle.

A total of six Hawaii public schools were recognized in The Washington Post’s “2012 High School Challenge Index.” Others on the list were: Kalaheo High, Campbell High, Kalani High, and Mililani High on Oahu.

Hawaii Schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi congratulated the schools on the achievement saying in a statement today, “It is truly an honor and a testament to the schools’ dedication and commitment to ensuring our graduates are ready for success in college.”

Since first being established in 1998, the list was expanded last year to also include the rankings of high schools across the county.

The rankings are determined by dividing the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other college-level tests given by a school by the number of graduating seniors.

According to the publication, the rating can reveal the level of a high school’s commitment to preparing average students for college.

The complete list of 2,000 schools recognized in the 2012 Challenge Index, is posted at: http://apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge/
