Maui police are investigating the death of a Maui teen who was found unresponsive at a Kahului home on Thursday afternoon. The investigation has been classified as an unattended death, drug overdose.
According to a preliminary investigation, police say the 15-year-old juvenile from Kahului allegedly brought prescription pain medications to a party at the home the night before and had offered it to other party goers.
Police say the victim, and a second individual were observed ingesting the prescription pain medication along with beer at around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2012.
According to police, the second individual, a 19-year-old male from Kihei, was observed to be in distress upon police arrival at 1:23 p.m., and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was placed under observation.
Police say the individual has since been upgraded to stable condition and is expected to be released today.
The owner of the home, who told authorities he was out of town, said he did not give anyone permission to enter his home, and said he was unaware of the party.
Police Lt. Jayson Rego issued information stating that the investigation is ongoing to determine how the victim was able to obtain prescription pain medication, and who gained access to the home without the owner’s authorization.
