A West Maui woman who was extricated from a vehicle involved in a crash on the Honoapiilani Highway on Thursday afternoon, has since died from injuries she sustained in the crash, police said.
Maui police have since identified the woman as 39-year-old Arlyn Visitacion.
According to police reports, Visitacion was the driver of an SUV that was struck in a near head-on collision just west of the pali tunnel at around 1:33 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
Visitacion, and her front seat passenger, a 48-year-old Lahaina woman, had to be extricated from the vehicle they were in, when it was struck by an oncoming pickup truck near mile marker 10. Police say the pickup, driven by a 35-year-old Lahaina man, was traveling East toward Wailuku when it failed to negotiate a turn in the road, crossed the center line, and pushed the SUV into a rock embankment.
Police say the involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
This was Maui County’s 18th traffic fatality for 2012, compared to 12 at the same time last year.
