Esther Kia’aina Named DLNR Deputy Director

Governor Neil Abercrombie announced the appointment of Esther Kia’aina to the deputy director post at the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Kia’aina fills the vacancy left by Guy Kaulukukui who resigned in August.

Kia’aina made an unsuccessful run during the primary elections for the 2nd congressional district seat on the Democratic ticket.

She returned to Hawaii after 20 years of service in Washington, DC where she worked for US Senator Daniel Akaka, Congressman Robert Underwood, and Congressman Ed Case.

Her past work experience also includes time spent as former chief advocate at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and former land asset manager of The Kamehameha Schools’ Land Assets Division.

“Esther is committed to public service and is passionate about our land and natural resources,” stated Governor Abercrombie. “Her breadth of experience in policy and land management complements what we are doing in our New Day plans.”

Kia’aina begins her new post with the state on Oct.15, 2012.
