The rodeo community on Maui will host an event this weekend in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Maui.

The Proud to Wear Purple event is put on by the group Parents And Children Together and the Kaupakalua Roping Club.

A Horse & Rider theme contest challenges riders to dress up in the paniolo tradition with a matching Proud to Wear Purple theme for their horses.

The event begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 14, at the Kaupakalua Roping Club Arena located off Ulumalu Road at Alekanekelo Place in Haiku.

A food booth will also be available with proceeds to benefit the Kaupakalua Roping Club.

Nationwide domestic violence service providers, survivors and concerned citizens sponsor a variety of events to bring attention to the serious crime of domestic violence.

Organizers of a separate event held earlier this month noted that Maui County police respond to more than 4,000 incidents of domestic violence each year.

This year the Hawaii Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault has chosen the statewide theme of “No More, Know More: Make It Your Business To Stop Domestic Violence. Purple is the color chosen to help spread awareness of domestic violence.
