2 Pedestrians Struck in Deadly Kahului Crash

One woman is dead and another female was hospitalized after they were struck by a vehicle while walking in Kahului on Sunday night, Oct. 28, 2012.

The incident was reported at 6:52 p.m. on Vevau Street, about 300 feet east of the Kane Street intersection.

Police say 21-year-old Devon King succumbed to her injuries and died after being transported to the hospital for treatment.

According to police reports, speed and alcohol are suspected as factors in the crash.

The women were struck by a 1998 Ford Explorer that was being operated by a 27-year-old Kahului resident, police said.  The vehicle was traveling east on Vevau Street when it left the roadway and struck the pedestrians on the dirt shoulder of the road, police said.

The incident was Maui County’s 20th traffic fatality in 2012, compared to 16 at the same time last year.
