Two men attempting to hike from Olowalu to Iao Valley spent the night on a ridge before being extracted in a rescue by firefighters on Sunday morning, November 4, 2012.

A friend initiated the call to 911 at around 9 a.m. on Sunday, reporting that the two men, ages 25 and 23, were overdue.

The men were extracted off of the second saddle on the Olowalu side of ‘Iao Valley at around 10:44 a.m., according to Maui Fire Services Chief, Lee Mainaga.

Mainaga said the hikers were transported to a landing zone located in ‘Iao Valley State Park, and did not require any medical attention.

Also responding to the incident were firefighters from Rescue 10 out of Kahului, and Engine 1 out of Wailuku.
