No Tsunami Threat to Hawai’i After 6.9 Kuril Islands Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawai’i following a 6.9 preliminary magnitude earthquake in the Kuril Islands.

The quake was reported at 4:06 a.m. HST at a depth of 52 km.

According to the USGS, the earthquake was centered 52 miles southeast of Ozernovskiy, Russia; 144 miles SSW of Vilyuchinsk, Russia; 155 miles SSW of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia; 161 miles SSW of Yelizovo, Russia; and 1367 miles NE of Tokyo, Japan.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying, “Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawai’i.”
