Help Sought in Locating Owner of Unoccupied Kayak

The Coast Guard continues to seek help from the public in identifying the owner of an 8-10 foot red and yellow kayak, found floating approximately two miles offshore from Makena, Maui Monday, officials said.

The Coast Guard’s Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony L. Soto said the agency has not received any reports of missing persons or individuals in distress.

He noted that an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was issued to alert mariners to a possible kayaker in distress.

According to Soto, the Coast Guard is working with Maui Fire Department to determine who the owner may be. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sector Honolulu command center at 808-842-2600.

Authorities are reportedly seeking the public’s help in locating the owner of an unoccupied kayak found offshore of Makena this morning.

Maui Canoe Club President Michael Elam said members of both the Maui Canoe Club and Kihei Canoe Club were contacted to provide assistance in identifying the owner of the craft.

According to Elam, the craft was found about two miles out from Makena at around 7:05 a.m. on Monday, April 8.

The kayak has the wording “Perception Sports” on it and also has a small sticker that says “No Trespassing,” according to Elam.

Anyone with information the kayak or its owner is asked to contact the Coast Guard at (808) 842-2600.
