A 25-year-old visitor from Austin, Texas, was rescued by Maui firefighters after he apparently fell and injured his back on a popular off road path in Makawao, fire officials said.

The incident was reported at 4:50 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, on the Kahakapao Loop Trail in Makawao.

Firefighters from Makawao and rescue personnel from Kahului responded to the scene, as well as crews the American Medical Response, authorities said.

Firefighters and medics hiked about a mile into the trail to extricate the mountain bike rider, who was then transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
