Maui Man Released After Domestic Abuse Charges

A Maui man was arrested and charged with abuse of a family member by strangulation and child abuse/neglect, police said.
The charges stem from a domestic abuse incident reported over the weekend.
According to police reports, officers responded to the Maui Memorial Medical Center at 10:37 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, for a report of a male juvenile who was reportedly being treated after an alleged confrontation with his father, Kevin Vaivai, 38, of Lahaina.
Several hours later, at 1:25 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, police arrested and charged Vaivai in connection with the incident, according to Maui Police Lt. William Juan.
Vaivai is employed with the state Sheriff’s Department, according to police reports.
Police say Vaivai was released at around 3:23 a.m. on Monday after posting $5,200 bail, said Lt. Juan.
