The County of Maui Department of Public Works has announced the one-day closure of South Kīhei Road on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, for repairs to the Waiakoa Culvert fronting the Old Suda Store.

Work involves the installation of ¾-inch steel plates over the culvert to relieve stress on the deteriorating structure, county officials said in a press release today.

The repairs will require a complete road closure of that portion of South Kīhei Road from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 3, officials said.

During the road closure, motorists will not be able to access South Kīhei Road from the north (Old Suda Store); but instead, will be routed onto Piʻilani Highway. Motorists approaching from the south will be detoured onto Uwapo Road.

The steel plate mitigation comes as the county conducted emergency culvert stabilization last week Thursday on a separate portion of South Kīhei Road at the Kūlanihākoʻi Bridge.
