No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi After 7.0 Alaska Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a 7.0 earthquake reported in the Andreanof Islands/Aleutian Islands region of Alaska, officials said.

The preliminary magnitude 7.0 earthquake (previously reported as 6.8), occurred 65 miles SW of Atka Village, Alaska at 6:26 a.m. HST on Friday 8/30/2013, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

The Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer AK also issued a statement saying there is no tsunami danger to Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon or California.

The USGS says the epicenter was located near the following locations: 57 miles E/SE of Adak, Alaska; 938 miles S/SE of Anadyr’, Russia’; and 1642 miles W of Whitehorse, Canada.
