The plane, described by witnesses as a Mokulele Airlines “Express” aircraft, landed approximately 50 yards south of the Piʻilani Highway / Kilohana Drive intersection, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

A total of 10 people were on board including eight passengers and two pilots, officials tell Maui Now.

The airplane is intact, and there were no injuries reported according to FS Chief Mainaga.

The Piʻilani Highway remained closed between Kilohana Drive and Wailea Ike Drive until around 10:45 p.m. while officials with the State Department of Transportation conducted an investigation.

According to a preliminary report with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna plane sustained only minor damage when pilots force-landed the craft on the highway.

The commuter plane was reportedly en route from Kahului to Kamuela on Hawaiʻi Island when the incident occurred.
