Annual Closure Of ‘Ama‘Ama Season Goes Into Effect

The closed season on ʻamaʻama or striped mullet begins on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, and continues through Monday, March 31, 2014, as the species enters its peak spawning season, state officials announced.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources chairperson, William Aila Jr. said, the spawning season increases the species vulnerability to fishing pressure. “The annual winter closure is designed to help the fish reproduce successfully and protect the species from overfishing,” he said.

Violators of the closed season restriction can face fines of up to $500, and/or 30 days in jail, plus up to $100 for each fish taken, according to the DLNR.

In addition to criminal penalties, an administrative fine of up to $1,000 per violation may be assessed by the department, officials said.

“While it’s DLNR’s job to protect our marine resources, everyone shares in the responsibility to take care of important fish species like ‘ama‘ama to ensure their survival into the future,” said Aila.
