A 64-year-old man was airlifted from a remote area of Kanaio after falling off of his horse in a remote area of the Piʻilani Highway over the weekend.

The incident was reported at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, approximately 1 mile down an unimproved road makai of the highway between mile post 17 and 18, fire officials said.

Firefighters from Kula and a rescue company from Kahului packaged and hauled the man to a landing zone on the highway, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
