Rainfall at Kahului Breaks 30 Year Old Record

Yesterday’s rainfall at Kahului Airport broke an old record set 30 years ago for daily maximum rainfall for the same day in previous years.

The National Weather Service reports that as of 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, an estimated 0.66 inches of rain fell.

That breaks the old record of 0.6 inches set in 1984.

While the rainfall breaks the record for the same day in Kahului, there were other parts of the island that recorded more rainfall yesterday.

Over the 24-hour period ending at 5 a.m. today, the NWS recorded the following rainfall totals on Maui: 3.17 inches at Kaupo Gap, 2.91 inches at Puʻu Kukui, 2.26 inches in Kula, 1.7 inches at ʻUlupalakua, 1.1 inches in Hāna, and 0.85 inches at Kahului Airport.

Over the same period, the Lānaʻi rain gauge recorded 2.06 inches, and Molokaʻi’s Kaunakakai Mauka gauge recorded 1.56 inches of rain.
