The statewide fourth summary report was released at 7:30 a.m., confirming leads indicated in previous reports.

Maui’s voter turnout improved with 71,634 people casting ballots or 66.4 percent.  This included more than 67,000 that voted by mail and 4,500 who voted in person.  The state voter turnout was also impressive at 66.9 percent, nearing levels last seen during the 1998 election, more than 20 years ago when voter turnout was 68 percent.

In races of statewide importance, Kai Kahele from Hawaiʻi Island joins Ed Case in Congress with both defeating their challengers to represent Hawaiʻi in Washington.

The presidential race remains undecided as ballot counting continues in key battleground states. In Hawaiʻi, Biden has 63% of the vote, while Trump supporters cast more than 196,000 votes or 34% of the vote.

On Maui, all incumbent council members seeking reelection showed healthy leads against their opponents.

On Lānaʻi, Gabe Johnson had 44 percent of the vote while his opponent, Alberta De Jetley garnered 34 percent. The two are seeking to fill the vacancy created by Riki Hokama who reaches his term limit.

In the races for state House, Maui Representatives Angus McKelvey, Tina Wildberger and Lynn DeCoite were well ahead of their opponents.  In the Senate, Justin Woodson and Gil Keith-Agaran both held healthy leads as well with 74 percent and 60 percent of votes in their respective races.

In the race for Honolulu Mayor, former TV executive, Rick Blangiardi took more than 58% of the vote against Keith Amemiya.  And on Hawaiʻi Island, Mitch Roth held a 57% leading margin over his opponent, Ikaika Marzo according to the latest report.

UPDATE: 11:50 p.m. 11.03.20

The first printout (second summary report) for the 2020 General Election had been released as of 11:38 p.m.  The report was initially expected to be released at around 7 p.m., but was delayed by nearly five hours due to long lines at Voter Service Centers, most notably at Kapolei Hale on Oʻahu.

Elections officials were unable to release initial results until all polling places had closed.  The first printout was expected to include the majority ballots received through Monday including those dropped off at places of deposit and votes cast by mail.

State Elections Chief Scott Nago explained In an evening update on KHON2, that many voters at the location required extra time to register or update registration, which resulted in a backlog.  He noted that election workers were attempting to add in results from voter service centers that had closed earlier in the evening, saying those numbers could possibly be added to the first printout.

On Kauaʻi, a third summary report was released as all other islands still reflected a second summary result.  In Maui County, the printout showed a total turnout of 65,641 (60.8 %), with 61,084 reflecting the mail-in turnout and 4,557 in-person votes.

On Maui, all incumbent council members seeking reelection showed healthy leads against their opponents as of midnight.

On Lānaʻi, Gabe Johnson had 29,338 votes (44.7%) while his opponent, Alberta De Jetley garnered 22,690 (34.6%) following the second summary report. The two are seeking to fill the vacancy created by Riki Hokama who reaches his term limit.

As of midnight, the closest race on Maui was for the Kahului Council seat where less than four percentage points (2,485 votes) separated incumbent Tasha Kama form her opponent Carol Lee Kamekona.

Incumbent Council candidates Yuki Lei Sugimura from Upcountry Maui, and Alice Lee who represents Wailuku/Waiheʻe/Waikapū, were uncontested.

In the races for state House, Maui Representatives Angus McKelvey, Tina Wildberger and Lynn DeCoite were well ahead of their opponents after the second summary report.  In the Senate, Justin Woodson and Gil Keith-Agaran both held healthy leads as well with 74 percent and 61 percent of votes in their respective races.

In the race for Honolulu Mayor, former TV executive, Rick Blangiardi took more than 57% of the vote against Keith Amemiya.  And on Hawaii Island, Mitch Roth holds the same 57% leading margin over his opponent, Ikaika Marzo.

*Note: Presidential results included in our report are for Hawaiʻi only.

County of Maui ballot box at the Kalana o Maui building in Wailuku. PC: by Wendy Osher 8.8.20

UPDATE: 10:47 p.m. 11.03.20

As of 10:47 p.m., the first printout has yet to be released.  The delay is the result of long lines at the close of the polls at 7 p.m.  Anyone who was in line by the close of polls was being allowed to vote.  All of those votes have to be accounted for and polling centers officially closed before the first results are released.

Elections officials say more than a half-million ballots have been cast before Election Day, marking a record breaking number of people participating in the election. That’s not including the in-person voting that took place today or the ballots that were dropped off earlier today. This already surpasses the record set during the 2008 election when 456,064 total ballots were cast; and 2016 when 437,664 ballots were counted.

Long lines were reported across the state at the close of polls at 7 p.m. Shortly before the polls closed on Maui, there were still an estimated 80 people waiting in line at the Velma McWayne Santos Voter Service Center.  The Maui center has since closed and elections officials are still awaiting the official closure of polls on Oʻahu.

At 10 p.m., KHON2 was reporting that there were still people in line at both Honolulu Hale (15 outstanding voters) and Kapolei Hale (more than 100 in line) on Oʻahu.  By 10:47 p.m., there was no longer a line outside of Kapolei Hale, a strong indicator that the first printout could be released shortly.

PREVIOUS REPORT:

The first set of results from the 2020 General Election in Hawaiʻi will be released after 7 p.m. once voter service centers have closed. Anyone in line before 7 p.m. at designated Voter Service Centers will still be able to cast their ballot.

Long lines reported earlier in the day at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center resulted in wait times of 75-90 minutes. At around 6:45 p.m., the line was still snaking around the parking lot and had about 80 people waiting.  There were big gaps between voters though, who were following the six feet guidance for distancing, making the line appear longer than normal.

The first printout is expected to include all ballots received through Monday including those dropped off at places of deposit and votes cast by mail.  The second printout at around 10 p.m. is expected to include the in-person votes that were cast today at Voter Service Centers across the state.

*Note: Presidential results included in our report are for Hawaiʻi only.
