A visitor is safe after being rescued by firefighters in ʻĪao Valley on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014.

Fire officials say the 26-year-old woman from Wisconsin was carried back to the road after crews received reports that she was feeling very cold and exhausted.

The incident was reported at around 5:24 p.m. about a quarter-mile into a trail along the stream near Kepaniwai Park.

Crews arriving on scene met the hiker and attempted to walk her down the trail, but ended up carrying her the last 50 yards back to the road, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

According to Mainaga, medics on scene assessed the hiker, but did not transport her, and released the woman back to her family.
